Berchemnaar fietst 2.750 kilometer door acht landen ten voordele van Gaza Sunbirds

Anton de Haan uit Berchem gaat binnenkort een fietstocht maken van 2.750 kilometer voor het goede doel. Met een fietstocht door acht verschillende landen, wil hij zo’n 22.000 euro inzamelen voor de Gaza Sunbirds. Dat is een team van wielrenners die in Gaza hulp proberen bieden vanop de fiets. Anton vertrekt komende vrijdag en de bedoeling is om op 24 augustus opnieuw aan te komen in Antwerpen.

Team Palestine achieve first cycling top 20 finish & qualify for World Championships whilst teammates deliver aid back home

After being evacuated from Gaza, two amputee athletes, Alaa al-Dali and Mohamed Asfour, earned Palestinian's first-ever top 20 finish at the Para-Cycling World Cup in Belgium on 2nd and 4th May this year. Despite immense challenges in Gaza—including life changing injury, displacement, and years under siege—Alaa and Mohamed have qualified for the upcoming World Championships in August. They are realising the dream which their team, the Gaza Sunbirds is founded on: to represent Palestine on the global stage.

Alaa becoming the first Palestinian to rank top 20 in his road race on Sunday 4th May builds on his previous historic debut. He was the first person to represent his country at last year’s World Championships. Now, both he and Mohamed have secured qualification for the 2025 edition—with their sights set firmly on the LA 2028 Paralympics.

As well as racing against 22 entrants from all over the world, the races were an important opportunity to further the sporting integration of Palestine with athletes from around the world. In that spirit, the country’s riders connected with Peruvian entrant, Israel Hilario who showed great support, attending two events which the Gaza Sunbirds hosted. They also arranged jersey swaps with South Korea and Saudi Arabia and local fans came out to show their support including Green Party city councilor for Brugge, Karin Robert.

“We ride for our country with pride, and thank God Palestine was among the countries that qualified for the upcoming World Championship. At the same time, our people in Gaza are experiencing famine, killing, and genocide, and the situation is very bad. Despite this, our teammates are still trying to help and are continuing to deliver aid to our people experiencing intense famine. This is something that athletes around the world must know to help us stop this destruction of Gaza, and the whole world must raise its voice, including the sports world, until the attacks against us stop.” Said Alaa al-Dali, Gaza Sunbirds co-founder, team captain and entrant for Palestine at UCI Para-cycling World Cup

Gazan athletes make up a substantial number of the medals won by Palestinian delegations at international competitions including five at the Paralympic Games. The nation ranks within the top three Arab countries in para-sporting achievement and last year’s entrant, Fadi Aldeeb is a big supporter of Para-cycling’s the strip’s champions.

The Gaza Sunbirds was launched by Alaa in 2020, after he suffered an amputation after being shot in the leg at a peaceful protest in Gaza. He assembled 19 teammates with similar injuries from Israeli attacks and rewrote his personal ambition of competing individually into a collective project using sport to empower others. Alaa and teammate, Mohamed were evacuated last year to compete globally. The remaining athletes have been continuing the squad’s courageous aid missions - totalling $450,000 worth - carried out since October 2023 using international donations. They hope to one day build a sports and rehabilitation centre in order to support and uplift their community further, especially the thousands of children amputated as a result of current and historic Israeli assaults

Both athletes wore brand new kits designed by KLABU, a Dutch non-profit that builds sports clubhouses for displaced communities around the world. These jerseys are now available for purchase, with profits supporting the missions of both KLABU and Gaza Sunbirds.

Onder de naam Hearts for Gaza gaan wielrenners, fietsers, hardlopers en wandelaars op zondag 9 maart in en vanuit Eindhoven routes afleggen in de vorm van een hartje. Met deze actie wordt geld ingezameld voor de Gaza Sunbirds, een team van parawielrenners dat zich inzet voor hulp en hoop in hun verwoeste land. Ook is er een tentoonstelling van Palestijnse kunstenaars te zien bij de bekende Eindhovense kunstenaar Henk Visch, met Syrisch eten. Het evenement wil daarmee tevens de Palestijnse waarden van gastvrijheid en solidariteit tot uitdrukking brengen en laten zien dat sport en kunst verbinden en verbroederen en een boodschap van hoop en kracht kunnen verspreiden.

Hearts for Gaza, een initiatief van enkele leden van de Koersklub Rood-Wit uit Antwerpen, is in feite een online platform. Via de gelijknamige website (www.heartsforgaza.org) kunnen individuen en sportorganisaties in allerlei landen en steden zelf fiets-, loop- en wandelroutes creëren en organiseren om samen in actie te komen en solidariteit te tonen met de slachtoffers van de humanitaire crisis in Gaza.

Lancering in Eindhoven

De activiteiten in Eindhoven op 9 maart vormen tevens de lancering van het internationale platform. Naast de initiatiefnemers uit Antwerpen zijn in Eindhoven wielercafé Cyklist en loopgroep Get Running betrokken bij de organisatie, evenals de kunstenaars Jos van der Sommen en Henk Visch met zijn partner Irene Veenstra.

In zijn galerie AutoVitesse heeft Henk Visch een tentoonstelling samengesteld van Palestijnse kunstenaars en eigen werk, getiteld ‘If I Must Die, You Must Live’. Dit zijn de eerste twee regels van een gedicht van de Palestijnse schrijver Refaat Alareer, die in december 2023 om het leven kwam bij een bombardement in Noord-Gaza.

De wielrenners, fietsers, hardlopers en wandelaars zijn na hun sportieve bijdrage uitgenodigd voor een bezoek aan deze expositie waar ze tevens door de Palestijnse Faten Abushab worden onthaald op een maaltijd uit de Syrische keuken.

Rechterbeen geamputeerd

Het ingezamelde geld is bestemd voor de Gaza Sunbirds, een team van een twintigtal parawielrenners, opgericht in 2020 door Karim Ali en Alaa al Dali. Die laatste gold als een talentvolle Palestijnse wielrenner, tot hij in 2018 zijn rechterbeen verloor door een amputatie nadat hij werd geraakt door een Israëlische scherpschutter terwijl hij in zijn wieleroutfit en met zijn renfiets aan de hand op afstand stond te kijken naar een demonstratie. Hij zette zijn sportieve carrière voort als parawielrenner. Alaa al Dali wist zich vorig jaar net niet te plaatsen voor de Olympische Spelen in Parijs, maar deed later dat jaar wel mee aan het WK in Zurich.

Sinds het uitbreken van het Israël-Hamas conflict in oktober 2023 hebben de Gaza Sunbirds hun focus verlegd naar humanitaire hulp binnen Gaza. Ze gebruiken hun fietsen om voedsel en andere benodigdheden te distribueren naar locaties en in gebieden die moeilijk of niet bereikbaar zijn voor hulporganisaties. Ook hebben ze inmiddels contacten opgebouwd met diverse fondswervende organisaties.

Antwerpen en andere steden

Na Eindhoven staat het volgende evenement van Hearts for Gaza gepland in Antwerpen op 30 maart. Inmiddels is er belangstelling uit diverse andere steden om ook een evenement te organiseren, waaronder Brussel, Gent, Londen, Saint-Etienne en Berlijn.
